The continuous progress of urbanization has caused changes of the ecological environment. How to monitor the dynamic quality of urban ecological environment in a comprehensive, multi-scale, and long-term sequence is an important direction of current research. Using the Landsat TM and OLI remote sensing images of Yuxi City from 2005 to 2020 as the research data, we constructed a model of Remote Sensing Ecological Index(RSEI)with four indicators(vegetation index, wetness index, normalize difference build-up and soil index and land surface temperature), and used principal component analysis to monitor and evaluate the ecological environment quality of Yuxi City during 16 years. The results show that:(1)the ecological environment quality of Yuxi City fluctuates as the S-shaped pattern in the period from 2005 to 2020, and the average RSEI decreased from 0.605 to 0.568; the ecological environment of Yuxi City has declined, but the overall level is at a moderate level;(2)ecological environment quality is poorer, and the poor area has increased by 1 014.05 km2, and the total area of the excellent and good grades of this region has decreased by 1 306.43 km2, of which the poorer areas with ecological environment quality mainly distribute in Yuanjiang dry-hot valleys, areas with good ecological environment quality distribute across Yuxi except Yuanjiang dry-hot valleys and Jiancheng District, but area with the best ecological environment quality is located in the Ailao Mountain;(3)the area where the ecological environment quality becomes worse is 6 255.35 km2, accounting for 42.51% of the total area, while the area where the ecological environment quality becomes better is only 2 514.26 km2, accounting for 17.08% of the total area; the improved areas with improved ecological environment quality are mainly in the central and southwestern parts of Yuxi City, but the ecological environment quality in the northwest and eastern parts of the city is degraded.
