The study of the characteristics of spatial distribution of cultivated land quality is the basis for the protection of cultivated land quality and the formulation of appropriate land policies. In this paper, the local spatial autocorrelation of the Moran index is used as the research method. Simao was taken as an example, Cluster analysis was carried out to identify the patch of the cultivated land map of Simao. According to the analysis results, cultivated land was zoned by use and protection methods. The results show that:(1)the quality of cultivated land in Simao presents a strong cluster in space, high-quality cultivated land with high scores cluster mainly distributes in the urban area and around Liushun Town; inferior cultivated land with low scores cluster mainly distributes in the alpine valley area in the northwest of Simao; only a small number of cultivated land quality is negatively correlated or not significantly correlated, which is scattered across Simao;(2)based on clustering differences of local spatial autocorrelation of cultivated land natural index and utilization index, the cultivated land is divided into four areas: priority protection intensive use area; key protection high-efficiency utilization area; quality improvement potential utilization area and comprehensive improvement inefficient use area, and the corresponding strategies for cultivated land use and protection are proposed for the zoning. The research results can serve as the objective reflection of the natural and utilization status of the cultivated land in Simao District, and have the reference value for the research on the intra-regional optimization of industrial layout and the delimitation of protective zone of basic farmland.
