In order to analyze the temporal and spatial characteristics of land use change in Jianghan Plain, explore the causes and process of land use change, and predict the future trend of land use change, based on the spatial data of land use in 1990, 2000 and 2010 in Jianghan Plain, the land use change map, fluctuation map and change pattern map of two time series were constructed by using the method of geoscience information map, and the temporal and spatial changes and development process of land use in Jianghan Plain from 1990 to 2010 were analyzed. The results showed that:(1)between 1990 and 2010, cultivated land and water area were the main types of land use, cultivated land continued to decrease, water area and construction land continued to increase;(2)the main change map was the conversion among cultivated land and water area, construction land; the mutual transformation between cultivated land and water area concentrated in the low lake plain; the conversion of cultivated land to construction land ran through the whole research period, mainly in the surrounding areas of urban areas with relatively developed economy; and the conversion of construction land to cultivated land occurred in the later stage, mainly in Shishou City and Songzi City;(3)the area of shrinking cultivated land was the largest in the landslide map; the newly added water area was the largest, accounting for 46.39%; there were obvious differences in the area changes among the counties and cities;(4)the stability of the whole period occupied the main position in the change pattern map, followed by the later change pattern. This study shows that land use change in Jianghan Plain is characterized by typification of land use type, differentiation of land dynamic change and stabilization of land change mode.
