[Objective]Studying health assessment of typical plantation forests can provide a theoretical basis for formulating scientific management measures for plantation forests, improving the quality of forest resources and achieving sustainable development of plantation forests in Gansu. [Methods] Based on the field investigation of 68 typical sample plots in Gansu, this study took five main types of plantation forests(Robinia pseudoacacia, Populus spp, Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr, Picea asperata Mast and Pinus tabuliformis)of Gansu as the research samples, and selected 18 indicators such as forest community structure, productivity and resilience, etc. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis were used to build the plantation forest health evaluation index system and forest health evaluation model, and the forest health index was used to reflect the forest healthy level. [Results](1)60.3% of the plantation forests in Gansu were in sub-health state, 22.1% were in unhealthy state, 10.3% were in medium-health state, and 7.3% were in healthy state.(2)For different plantation forests, the forest health index of L. principis-rupprechtii Mary was significantly higher, while the P. spp was relatively the lowest, and the the ranking of forest health index was the L. principis-rupprechtii Mary(0.417)>P. asperata Mast(0.126)>R. pseudoacacia(0.106)>P. tabuliformis(0.000)>P. spp( -0.665).(3)For different forest age groups, the forest health indices of mature forests were significantly higher than those of other age groups, while young forests had lower health levels, and the ranking of forest health index was the mature forests(0.580)>near mature forests(-0.062)>middle-aged forests(-0.073)>young forests( -0.354). [Conclusion] The plantation forests in Gansu still need to strengthen forest tending and management, the scientific sustainable management measures should be formulated for the plantation forests in the region, to achieve sustainable development of plantation forest ecosystems in Gansu Province.
