Improving urban land use efficiency and promoting high-quality urban development have become the important contents and effective ways for regional sustainable development and land space optimization. Taking Dafeng District of Jiangsu Province as an example, we completed the scientific simulation of land use pattern in 2025 based on historical data and driving mechanism of land use change, and established a stochastic frontier function model to realize the quantitative description of the quantitative characteristics and time process of construction land use efficiency. The objective expression of the geographical change pattern of the decoupling relationship between the construction land use efficiency and construction land sprawl suggested that Dafeng District should adhere to the basic strategy of ‘controlling increments, revitalizing stocks, improve quality'. The results show that:(1)during the period 2016—2025, the ecological lands of Dafeng such as cultivated land, coastal wetlands and water bodies continued to decrease; the construction land continued to increase by 32.47 km2; invasion of coastal wetlands and expansion to the coast were the main features;(2)the utilization efficiency of construction land increased rapidly in the period from 2000 to 2025; the average utilization efficiency of construction land at town level had been raised from 0.592 in 2000 to 0.665 in 2016 and 0.682 in 2025; the differentiated regional industrial structure and the major land use function are the dominant factors in the spatial difference of construction land use efficiency;(3)from 2000 to 2012, the utilization efficiency of township construction land and the expansion of construction land were generally in strong decoupling relationship; after 2012, the expansion of construction land and utilization efficiency had slowed down trend, there was a general double hook and coupling relationship between the two; the spatiotemporal evolution law of the construction land use efficiency and its decoupling from construction land expansion in the coastal area can provide decision-making reference for the optimization of land space. The research framework and methodology are useful supplements to the research content of the construction land sprawl and its efficiency improvement.
