Check dams stored a lot of sediment and recorded much information for past environmental changes on the Loess Plateau. Studies on erosion rate, sediment source and sediment delivery ratio in small watersheds based on the information in check dams are summarized, the existing problems are analyzed, and future research topics are also pointed out, so that the recorded information in check dams can be better used for future researches on soil erosion and environmental evolution process on the Loess Plateau.
