Through field observation of shifting sand dunes on surfaces of shifting sandy land, semi-shifting sandy land and gravel Gobi desert, we investigated the migration velocity, direction and regularity of shifting sand dunes and semi-shifting sand dunes in different landscape types within a year in order to provide the theory basis for dune migration law and protection of oasis ecosystem. The results showed that annual migration distances of shifting and semi-shifting sand dunes on Cele oasis-desert ecotone were between 4.76 m and 12.92 m, the migration speeds of semi-shifting dunes decreased significantly compared with the shifting sand dunes. Moving direction of sand dunes was ESE (99.82°—115.48°). Annual migration distance of crescent dune on Gravel Gobi desert with 2 m high was 9.37 m, the moving direction was ESE (105.1°). The annual migration distance of shield dune with 0.9 m high was 19.15 m, the moving direction was ESE (93.77°), and the movement direction of shifting sand dunes was primarily in accord with resultant sand transporting potential direction for ESE (108°) within a year. Dune height and migration velocity followed the polynomial function inversely proportional relationship. If the effective prevention measures are not taken, shifting sand dunes will pose potential invasion threat to Cele oasis.
