As the acceleration of urbanization, the urban ecological and environmental problems have becoming more and more outstanding, which makes it very urgent to study the temporal-spatial variation of city NDVI. We took the metropolitan area of Chongqing Municipality as the research example, obtained the NDVI distributed dates in 1988—2012 by combining Human-computer Interaction, quantitative Remote Sense Technique and GIS and through the data sources including 1988, 2000, 2002, 2012 Landsat TM remote sensing data and 1∶50 000 DEM of the metropolitan area of Chongqing Municipality. The results showed that the NDVI of the metropolitan area of Chongqing Municipality had greatly changed in temporal-spatial variation and structures from 1988 to 2012. In addition, the change trend of NDVI appeared a certain regularity and showed a downward trend in the urban expansion area. On the other hand, the change trend of NDVI showed guaranteed relative stability. The result can offer scientific basis and reference for promoting the sustainable development of the city and optimizing urban ecological environment.
