Yunnan province was taken as an example in this study. The purpose of this study is to find out the essential of natural quality of cultivated land changing with elevation gradients because elevation is not taken account of the grading factor for farmland classification procedures. The correlation of cultivated natural quality and elevation gradient was comprehensively analyzed by using the methods combining the traditional mathematical statistics analysis with statistical analysis. With this methods, natural quality appears the trend that it will reduce if the altitude increases on the whole, but it was a slight recovery in the area where the gradients are 1 500~2 000 meters and above 3 500 meters. The results indicate that elevation level of the vertical distribution directly affects the regional cultivated land structure. It accurately reflects the status of cultivated land resource allocation in different elevation areas, it has important practical significance in enhancing the resource potential, improving the utilization efficiency of agricultural resources and promoting the economic and social sustainable development.
