In this study, we investigated such kinds of water quality issues based on analyses of temporal and spatial variability of 9 physical and chemical variables that were monitored in 88 sites of the Huntai River basin in 2009, 2010 and 2012. The stream water quality was assessed by using the single and comprehensive water quality identification index, CODMn (permanganate index), NH4+-N (ammonium), TN (total nitrogen) and TP (total phosphorus) were selected to be the primary assessment factors. The results showed that water quality presented obvious temporal and spatial heterogeneity. TN and NH3-N were the primary pollution factors in non-flood season, TN and TP coming from the non-point sources were the primary pollution factors in flood season. Water quality was better in non-flood season than in flood season. The stream water quality in upper reaches of Xiaotang river and south reaches, north reaches of Tai River were the best. The stream water quality in lower reaches of Wudaoli river, Yunliang River and Nansha River were classified as gradeⅤ and black. Our findings provide valuable information and guidance for water pollution control and water resource management in the Huntai River Basin.
