In order to understand the relationship between the spatial structure characteristics and the litter water holding characteristics in watershed of Taihu Lake, two different broad-leaved mixed forests were selected in Suzhou city, Jiangsu Province, traditional stand structure indices, four spatial structure indices and two forests litter water-holding properties were analyzed. The results are as followings: the species richness of Ilex purpurea and Pinus elliottii mixed forest is relatively high; I. purpurea and P. elliottii mixed forest spatial structure is more stable than Quercus and P. elliottii mixed forest; the litter of I. purpurea and P. elliottii mixed forest has better water retention characteristics. Species composition and spatial structure of water conservation forest have an impact on the water holding characteristics of the litter layer. This study can provide a scientific basis for the future research on a city water conservation forest structure adjustment and forest hydrological cycle mechanism.
