A variety of vegetation indices were established by using MOD13Q1 data, and estimation precision of the vegetation coverage was validated by measured data and TM image. The results show that: (1) established four vegetation indices (NDVI, EVI, RVI, MSAVI) have a higher correlation with actual vegetation coverage in the study area, indicating that the use of remote sensing method to estimate vegetation coverage is feasible in Shangrila County; (2) compared with TM image, the estimation result of vegetation coverage by using MSAVI is closer to the actual situation in Shangrila County than the results estimated by the other three kinds of indices.
