Effects of PAMs with different molecular weights (MW) (8×106, 1.2×107, 1.5×107 Da) and hydrolysis degrees (10%, 20%, 30%) on soil erosion and runoff were investigated through artificial simulation rainfall experiment. The results showed that all the three PAMs decreased soil erosion separately compared with the control, the molecular weight of 1.2×107 Da was more effective than the other two, the hydrolysis degree did not show much difference in affecting soil erosion. PAMs different in molecular weights and degrees of hydrolysis, increased runoff, the higher the molecular weight was, the more the runoff increased, meanwhile, the degree of hydrolysis influenced the runoff and the erosion in an inverse relation. All the PAMs affected the content of eroded sediment particles, the percentage of sand-sized particles increased, whereas the fraction of silt-sized and clay-sized particles decreased. Considering the costs of PAMs and the effect of erosion resistance, the PAM with hydrolysis of 10% and molecular weight of 1.2×107 Da was more suitable for application to colluvial deposits of Benggang.
