According to data of annual runoff and sediment in the Dongting Lake from 1951—2009, non-parameter Mann-Kendall tendency analysis (M-K method) and grandualness analysis (T-verifying method) were used to analyze the evolution characters and tendency of runoff and sediment in the Dongting Lake in recent 60 years. Year series was chosen as independent variable, and polynomial functions were used to fit accumulative runoff volume and sediment discharge in the Dongting Lake. The results showed that:① in recent 60 years in Dongting Lake area, runoff volume and sediment discharge from three outlets to Dongting Lake, sediment discharge from four rivers to Dongting Lake, runoff volume and sediment discharge in the output of Chenglingji showed significant decreasing tendency except the inconspicuous tendency of runoff volume from four rivers to Dongting Lake; ② the evolution process of runoff volume and sediment discharge simultaneously showed certain stage characteristics; ③ evolution characteristics and tendency of runoff volume and sediment discharge in Dongting Lake area were due to the curve-cuttings in the lower Jingjiang River system, the flow-cutting at Gezhouba Dam, Three Gorge Project, and other water conservancy projects.
