Abstract:: The purpose of the paper was to study land use changes and its driving forces in the developed area as well as to guide the regional sustainable socio-economic development and utilization of land resources. Taking Guangdong Province as an example, the article analyzed the quantity change, structure change and degree change of land use through 1996 to 2008. With the help of the statistic software SPSS, method of principle component analysis was employed to find out the driving factors of land use change from 1996 to 2008. The results showed that: (1) the range and degree of the land use change were very large; (2) in detail, cultivated land, forestland, grassland and unused land reduced greatly, but construction land, orchard land and other agricultural land had a net increase; (3) the driving factors causing the land use change are the economy and agriculture development factor, and the economy development factor is the most important factor, of course, the agriculture development factor can’t be ignored. It was concluded that activating the reserve land and reclaiming from the potential land resources would be important measures to solve the economic and agricultural development side by side in Guangdong Province.
