Optimum Spatial Distribution of Rural Settlements is an important way to solve the current distribution of scattered and inefficient use of rural settlements. In this paper, Mayang county is taken as an example, by means of GIS spatial analysis and landscape index analysis methods, using Land Use Data of Mayang county in 2005, the distribution of rural settlement was studied. The results showed that (1) The size and density differences of rural settlements in Ma yang county’s townships are significant, irregularly shaped patches but small regional differences; (2) Spatial distribution of rural settlements has characteristics of high dependence on the agricultural land and road; (3) Optimized spatial distribution of rural settlements in Mayang county is 2 controlled towns, 9 developing towns, 12 dissoluted towns, forming the radiation distribution system of ’two cores and four axis’.
