Taking the 1986 vector form based land detailed survey database and the 1990, 1995, and 2001 satellite data as information resources, this paper discussed the land-use and land-cover change of Luoyugou basin located in Tianshui city, Gansu Province.Based on the spatial analysis techniques supported by Arc/Info software and other mathematical statistical methods, this paper analyzed the spatial-temporal change characteristics of land use in the small watershed, revealed the major patterns and trends of land use and land cover change, the use of land-use dynamic degree of land-use change and the direction of the transference of land-use types and speed. The results show that the major land covers in the watershed are farmland and forestland which account for more than 80% of the whole area in the past 11 years. The basin of the comprehensive land-use dynamic degree is 0.23% from 1990 to 1995, and 1.09% from 1995 to 2001 and 0.89% from 1990 to 2001. The transference of land-use types of the main direction is to the forest land, which accounts for 86.82 % of the total change area. Secondly, at the turn of grass land, grass land accounts for 10.93% of the total change area. Last but not least, cropland accounts for 1.183%and the virgin land accounts for 1.060%.The conversions of cropland to forest, cropland to grassland are the major patterns of land use change. Which the average annual rates of conversion are 35.67 hm2 and 3.41 hm2. The average annual rates of conversions of the virgin land to forest, the virgin land to the grassland are 6.09 hm2 and 1.77 hm2; The average annual rate of conversions of the riverbed land to forest land is 5.31 hm2; There are other types of conversion which the average annual rate is much smaller.
