Evapotranspiration(ET) is one of the most significant component of the hydrologic cycle.Among the several ET estimation methods, the remote sensing method is regarded as the only technology that can efficiently and economically provide regional and global coverage of actual consumption. The SEBS(Surface Energy Balance System) has been designed to calculate the energy portioning at the regional scale with minimum ground data and has been verified at many places in the world including China.SEBS is a satellite image-processing model for computing ET maps for large areas. This paper used the SEBS method to estimate ET according to NOAA AVHRR data in the Sanjiang Plain in Heilongjiang province of China. The resuilt was validated by observed data.Resuilts showed that evapotranspiration increased in April, decreased in August and reached the peak in July. The reason of temporal distribution was also anlyzed.Meanwhile the spatial distribution of ET was anlyzed by the land-use pattern. The average ET of these land-use patterns during growing season were in the order of forest, waters, wetland, paddy, dry land, grassland, resident and industry land from big to small.
