Abstract:: [Objective]The aims of this study are to make people realize the importance of ecological base flow, its value was quantified, and to promote the work of ecological base flow guarantee compensation. [Methods]The main stream of Shaying River in Henan section was taken as an example. By analysis of ecological base flow function, the value of river ecological base flow was divided into maintaining river connectivity, local climate regulation, sediment transport, maintaining river wetland, biodiversity maintenance, water purification, aquatic product production, providing scientific research and cultural entertainment, etc. The value of climate regulation to river channels was estimated by the model built based on the amount of standard coal used to release the same heat amount which absorbed heat during water evaporating. The calculation of other values was carried out by adopting the resource and environmental economics algorithm. [Results]In 2021, the value of climate regulation in Henan section was 645.9 million yuan, the value of sediment transport was 505.6 million yuan, the value of maintaining river wetland was 96 million yuan, the value of maintaining ecological diversity was 22 million yuan, the value of water purification was 1.028 billion yuan, the value of aquatic product production was 1.092 billion yuan, and the value of cultural entertainment was 5.738 billion yuan, and the total value of ecological base flow was 9.044 7 billion yuan in Shaying River in Henan section. [Conclusion]The ecological base flow value of each reach varied greatly due to the different location, basin area and interval length. For each river segment, the ratio of the ecological base flow value to the local GDP is less than 1 per cent, which shows the rationality of the calculation results, and also facilitates the promotion of soil and water loss control, ecological protection and compensation in the future.
