[Objective] Spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of traditional villages were explored to provide scientific support for its concentrated contiguous protection and utilization. [Methods] 163 traditional villages in northern Shaanxi were taken as study areas. Their spatial distribution and influencing factors were analyzed from a macroscopic perspective by using ArcGIS 10.1 as the technical support platform, and Google Earth and Baidu Map to determine the basic geographic information including coordinates and elevation. [Results](1)The distribution of villages in northern Shaanxi has the characteristics of overall cohesion, partial dispersion, and extremely uneven distribution, forming three concentrated distribution areas: Luochuan Loess Tableland, Misui Loess Maoliang Hill and Yanchuan Liangmao Hill.(2)The spatial distribution of villages in northern Shaanxi was greatly affected by natural factors such as topography and water system, and there is consistency in spatial orientation.(3)The spatial distribution of traditional villages in northern Shaanxi is positively correlated with the regional population, but negatively correlated with the regional economy. Farming and military defense villages account for the largest proportion of historical and cultural factors, and they have obvious regional agglomeration in space. [Conclusion] The spatial distribution of the villages in northern Shaanxi is extremely unbalanced and cohesive, which is the result of the interaction of natural and human factors. Based on the spatial distribution characteristics, the village clusters in northern Shaanxi can be delineated(such as the Luochuan apple culture cluster, Great Wall cultural agglomeration belt, etc.), and cooperate with the cultural characteristics of regional heritage resources to form a concentrated and contiguous protection and utilization.
