In order to explore the evolution and coupling relationship of the economic spatial pattern of the population in the Wujiang River Basin, the GDP and permanent resident population data of 69 districts and counties from 2000 to 2019 were selected, and the spatial pattern and interrelationship of the economic population were quantitatively analysed by using the geographical concentration, ESDA-GIS and coupling index. The results show that:(1)The resident population decreased from 36.264 6 million to 35.641 2 million, and the average annual growth rate of per capita GDP is about 15.13%;(2)The difference of population and economic development among county-level administrative regions is increasing, the spatial distribution of economically developed and densely populated counties overlaps, which are concentrated in the middle and south of the basin;(3)The economic centre of gravity and the population centre of gravity move away from the geometric centre of gravity of the basin to the southwest;(4)The population economic coupling index indicates that the coordination of population and economic development in the basin has improved. To sum up, the uncoordinated regional development of the Wujiang River Basin is still grim. It is still one of the problems to be solved in the future in order to narrow the development gap of the northeast and the southern and central parts of the basin, and improve the coordination of population and economic development.
