Study on characteristics of the spatial and temporal variation of reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) is a very important for hydrology and agriculture in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Based on the meteorological data of 55 stations in Xinjiang during the period from 1961 to 2013, the annual and seasonal reference crop evapotranspiration was calculated using the Penman-Monteith model and the tempo-spatial change characteristics was analyzed. The multiple regression analysis was used to quantitatively analyse the dominant factor affecting the reference crop evapotranspiration. The results indicated that annual ET0 presented the decreasing tendency, the tendency rate of annual ET0 was -1.01 mm/a. ET0 was higher before 1980s than after 1980s, and experienced the process from the decrease during 1990s, while it showed an increasing tendency since 2000. The decreasing tendency of ET0 in summer and autumn was quite similar to that of annual ET0, the decreasing tendency of ET0 was not obvious in spring and winter. There was the marked geographical difference in ET0 in different seasons. The wind speed and temperature were the dominant factors influencing ET0. The wind speed is main reason for the annual, summer and autumn variations of the ET0, temperature plays the major part in spring and winter variations of the ET0.
