The relief amplitude of abandoned quarry is one of the important terrain indexes of soil and water conservation management and ecological restoration in mining area. Twelve different levels of DEMs such as 0.5 m, 0.7 m, 1.0 m, 1.5 m and so on, were taken as the data sources. GIS’s grid window increment analysis method and change point method were used for the analysis of the twelve different levels of DEMs to extract relief amplitude. The results showed that the optimum statistical unit was 9×9 grid. The relationship between the optimum statistical unit area of the relief amplitude and the corresponding resolution was relatively close, which could be described by a power function. The optimum statistical unit area of 0.5 m DEM relief amplitude was 20.25 m2. The relief amplitude greater than 5 m accounted for 13.12% of the total area. The change point method was used to determine the optimum statistical unit of the relief amplitude, which is also applicable to the terrain analysis of the abandoned quarry.
