Through statistics and analysis of historical precipitation data from 1979 to 2008 in Zhongwei City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, the paper studied the change, grades and causes of the drought disaster by using method of precipitation anomalies. The drought grade during the key water requirement periods of local main crops (spring wheat and maize) was calculated. The results showed that the agricultural drought had the seasonal, durative, random and frequent characteristics. Agricultural drought frequently occurred during the 30 years, drought mainly occurred in spring, its probability of occurrence reached 53%; drought occurring in spring and summer multi-seasons most influenced the local agriculture, its probability of occurrence reached 30%. Accordingly, the authors proposed corresponding countermeasures and methods to control drought.
