To explore the spatial expansion evolution process of housing land in Chinese cities and to promote the rational use of housing land,in this paper, based on the data of Statistical Yearbook, the overall change of housing land use is analyzed, the spatial and temporal evolution of housing land provincial-scale exopansion in the period of 1996-2007 in Chinese cities is discussed quantitatively. Methods of the spatial analysis and quantitative analysis are employed and the four parameters are introduced in the study. The results showed that:(1) The overall change of housing land reveals the model characteristic with three stages, and that the positive macro-control intervention is required greatly;(2) The regional differentiation and the level of diversity of housing land use are obvious;(3) Variation of the regional difference is positively consistent with its proportion basically;(4) The major areas of the spatial expansion of housing land in Chinese cities are mainly located in East China and Central South of China. This study suggested that the regional differences should be considered in the regulation of housing land in the future.
