A literature review provided a thorough look at eco-regionlization.The analysis has shown that the primary methods used in eco-regionalization are qualitative, and the selection of experts has great influence on results. Therefore, quantitative method was needed. This paper explored quantitative methods to improve two major features of eco-regionalization.Principal component analysis was applied to the selection of relevant regional environmental factors,as well as hierarchical clustering method in boundary determination. The eco-regionalization of Liao River basin was taken as a case study.Four factors including rainfall, altitude, vegetation, and soil type were chosen for the delineation process.Three ecoregions of GradeⅠ,and nine ecoregions of GradeⅡwere delineated within Liao River basin. This paper was intended to provide an appropriate framework for environmental research, assessment, monitoring, and management using improved ecoregionlization method.
