In this paper,a system coordination degree model was employed to perform an evaluation on intensive use of urban land based on land use data of Changsha,Zhuzhou and Xiangtan Urban Agglomeration from 1997 to 2008.Spatial differences in urban land were investigated from perspectives of state and time. The results indicated that intensive use level of urban land in Changsha,Zhuzhou and Xiangtan Urban Agglomeration has progressively increased in recent years. The level of intensive use was at a primary stage during the period from 1997 to 2004.After 2004,the intensive degree showed an increasing trend and approached a value of 77.89 in 2008,a relatively high intensity. It was concluded that the primary factors for determining the level of intensive use are land use structure and land use intensity. The harmonious degree for five sub-systems all exhibited a curve showing the lowest and negative values both in 2002 and 2003,which indicated an obvious unstable status of urban land use system.Variations in values of Moran’s I from 1997 to 2008 demonstrated that the intensive degree of land use showed a high spatial aggregation feature.Overall, the value of Moran’s I was the highest in 2008,with showing a marked spatial aggregation feature. On the contrary, the value of Moran’s I was the lowest in 2002.It is especially critical for promoting sustainable development of urban land resources to substantially improving the efficiency of urban land utilization and to appropriately explore and protect urban land resources. The results presented in this study would offer a meaningful reference for study on intensive use of urban land and greatly benefit land utilization in Changsha,Zhuzhou and Xiangtan Urban Agglomeration.
