This article firstly summarized the researches on urban soil erosion in China, and pointed out that ecologicalization had been the mainstream of the study and practices of urban water and soil conservation. In the past two decades, the scholars had done many works in the field of urban soil erosion, but the research theories and methods that they used almost came from the study of natural soil erosion. So today, the study of urban soil erosion must pay more attention on quantity and ecology research in the larger scale.Under this background, landscape ecology should be broadened in the researches on urban soil erosion. From the vision of landscape ecology, urban soil erosion had three characteristics, namely the heterogeneous landscape between urban and rural area, the procedure influence from urbanization to urban soil erosion, and the regional synthesis of urban water and soil conservation. In recent years, the study urban soil erosion gradually formed a framework that composed of four fields: the characteristics of water and soil loss in urbanizing, the driving force of urban soil erosion, the assessment of urban soil erosion and the study on urban water and soil conservation. As a new theory and method tool, leading landscape ecology into the study of urban soil erosion was of great benefit to widen and deepen its framework: (1) On the research contents, landscape ecology had an advantage of describing the ecological characteristic of soil erosion and evaluating the land ecological security pattern based on urban water and soil conservation; (2) On the research methods, landscape pattern indices improved the quantity research method;(3) On the research approach, the theory of pattern-effect help the researchers to simplify the study of urban soil erosion’s driving force by avoiding complex mathematical and physical models.
