The soil physical and chemical properties in potential desertification grassland, light desertification grassland, medium desertification grassland, severe desertification grassland and extreme desertification grassland in Yanchi were studied to explore the impact of desertification on soil environment. The results showed that: the soil water contents were in the descendant order of potential desertification grassland, light desertification grassland, medium desertification grassland, severe desertification grassland, and extreme desertification grassland. Soil clay, silt, organic matter, total nitrogen content decreased, while sand content increased from the potential desertification grassland to the extreme desertification grassland. Changes of pH and soluble salinity content had no obvious trends. Overall, the main soil particle size is sand, the soil moisture and nutrient contents are very low. The soil environment was fragile and erodible.
