Slope length is one of the important topographical factors that can determine the energy change along a slope and affect the overland runoff and sediment process. We must appraise the slope length factor in order to establish soil erosion equation and to predict soil erosion. Slope length factor has been deeply studied both in the way of describing its character and treating it as a factor in a model. But these studies are mostly empirical. Studies on the physical meaning of slope length are still primary. Especially in our country, few works can be seen in this field. Based on studies both inside and outside our country, this paper has put forward some questions about slope length factor in soil erosion study and makes some expectation. It pointed out that study on erosion process should be strengthened when we appraise slope length factor.
