Land cover changes analysis by RS data has been widely used to study the environmental impact of the development project at present. Two kinds of construction project-hydropower reservoir project (Tianshengqiao No. 1 hydropower reservoir) and natural gas field exploitation project (Xiaoxinhe natural gas field) were discussed, and the land cover changes in the project areas were analyzed through interpretation of the Landsat-TM data. FRAGSTATS was applied in landscape structure analysis, and six representative quantitative indices of the landscape spatial structure and heterogeneity were analyzed. The results showed that land cover in the areas of the two projects both had great changes, and landscape spatial pattern had tended to become fragmented and diversified. Furthermore, there were different characteristics in the land cover changes comparing two projects. Hydropower reservoir had direct influence on land cover changes for great impoundment and occupation of land. However, natural gas field exploitation accelerated the development of other economic activities in surrounding region, which brought about land cover changes indirectly.
