GAP analysis is a geographic approach which combines individual species conservation with regional biodiversity conservation.GAP efforts identify "gaps" and areas that need conservation. It is a scientific approach to appraise the conservation status of all elements of the regional biodiversity.GAP stresses that the prerequisite of biodiversity conservation is to establish reserve networks. It considers not only the richest biodiversity areas but also the local species and ecosystems.Assessing the regional pattern for ecological security must consider the species and habitats conservation as well as the restoration of the damaged ecosystems and destroyed landscapes,in another word, not only conservation gap,but restoration gap should be considered. Therefore, the extended GAP approach can be applied to the analysis and assessment of ecological security pattern, and is a promising research method.
