In order to discuss the characteristic and trend of the cultivated land change of every province, municipality directly under the Central Government and Autonomous region of the western part of China in recent years, based on land-utilizing and land-covering data of 1995/1996 year that was offered by Environmental Monitoring General Station of China and of 1999/2000 year that was obtained by investigation, then two years space datum overlapped and analysed by GIS technology. The result shows:during this period, the cultivated area of the western region increased by 1 910 727 hm2 ,and reduced by 704 247 hm2 in the same term, only increased by 1 206 480 hm2 ,accounting for 2% of the total cultivated area;the cultivated area increase of the western region mainly stemmed from the meadow to cultivate which caused the cultivated land to increase by 12 990 000 hm2 ,accounting for 69.4% of total cultivated area increase;it will cause land desertification and soil erosion more serious to cultivate large stretch of meadow into cultivated land,in addition the state policies begin to transform to the western part of China in recent years, which will bring more severe test to ecology of every province in the west.
