Northwest China is short of water resources and sustainable development there depends on the rational and effective management of limited water resources.Based on the analysis of concept, features of ecological management and its significances to natural resources management together with water security in Northwest China viewing from ecological angle, some ecosystem approaches to assure water security in Northwest China were proposed which include: (1) to set up a new ecosystem management model of water resources taken the watershed as an unit; (2) to fully use market adjustment mechanism so as to perfect the water resources management; (3) to take the water resources capacity and water security as the base of ecological restoration and construction; and (4) to emphasize the water eco-environment so as to avoid more severe water crisis caused by water pollution.
